Host Country Profile

Half of Denmark’s electricity is generated by decentralized energy systems. These are commonly used in many other European countries, including Sweden, Germany, Austria, Finland, Italy, and Spain. Danish electricity generation has been moving away from production in the large central power stations. Instead, it favors many smaller locally based, and mostly CHP stations. The vast majority of these smaller stations use locally sourced bioenergy sources including straw and wood pellets. The Danish energy system is a role model that proves it is possible to sustain substantial economic growth while heavily reducing fossil fuel dependency.
